CHAPTER 6
Fear gripped Sarah as she debated what she should do next. Should she go back where she was and hide in the darkness in the hopes that whoever had shot the gun would leave her alone? On one hand, it seemed like her only chance to get out of there alive, especially if the shooter was trying to kill someone. On the other hand, if she stayed down here long enough, and the gunshot did enough damage to murder someone, Sarah would certainly be considered a suspect. Of course, there was the less selfish thought that occurred to her a few seconds later â if a gunshot rang out and people scattered running, it was possible that someone had been shot and might still be alive. If that were the case, then they most certainly would need help.
That was enough to snap her out of whatever shock sheâd been in. She dropped Alexander on the ground and said, âGo find it, boy.â
She didnât know what it was, and she certainly didnât trust Alexander to understand what she was saying. She was just hoping that he would sniff out the person they were possibly looking for.
It was an absolutely ridiculous feeling, not knowing if they were even looking for someone, yet being scared for her life.
Sarah thought back to her Aunt Ginny. If her aunt could see her now, she would certainly step in and lecture her about becoming swept up in the vanity and pursuit of needless ventures in their small town. She was always telling Sarah things like that. These parties and gatherings were all pointless and added nothing to their lives. She could hear those words running through her mind as she made her way, step by step by step, down the tunnel that led back to a place she was semi-familiar with.
She heard Alexander bark a few seconds later. It was a quick bark, followed by three more barks. Then the sound of his tiny little claws could be heard on the tile floor as he took his leave of the basement and reached the stairs.
He was too far away for Sarah to see. She had no idea where he was going, but she was about to see what that first bark had been about.
